What is sleep apnea?
Sleep apnea is a common but serious sleep disorder where your breathing repeatedly stops and starts while you sleep. The most frequent type is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), which happens when the muscles in the back of your throat relax too much and temporarily block your airway.
When your brain realizes you aren’t getting enough oxygen, it briefly wakes you up so you can reopen your airway—often with a loud snort, gasp, or choking sound. Because this can happen dozens of times every hour, it prevents you from getting the deep, restful sleep your body needs.
Who Is Most at Risk?
While sleep apnea can affect anyone, certain physical traits and lifestyle choices significantly increase your chances of developing it. You are at a higher risk if you carry excess body weight, particularly around the neck, or if you have specific anatomical features like a narrow airway, a small lower jaw, or a large tongue. Age and gender also play a role, as the condition is more common in men and adults over 40. Additionally, lifestyle habits like smoking, or drinking alcohol before bed, can worsen the condition by causing the throat muscles to over-relax. In children, the primary risk factor is often enlarged tonsils or adenoids, which can easily crowd their developing airways.

Why Your Dentist Cares
You might wonder why a dentist is asking about your sleep! The truth is, your mouth holds key clues. We often spot early warning signs of sleep apnea, such as chronic tooth grinding (bruxism), a scalloped tongue, or an unusually narrow airway.
For many patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea, custom Oral Appliance Therapy—a comfortable, custom-fit mouthpiece worn at night—can keep your airway open and serve as a highly effective alternative to bulky CPAP machines.
